Dr. Melinda Lerwill received her B.A. from Johns Hopkins University and her M.D. summa cum laude from Harvard Medical School. She completed her residency training in Anatomic Pathology and her fellowship training in Breast and Gynecological Pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Lerwill is the director of the Breast Pathology Service and Breast Pathology Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, and she is an Associate Pathologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Lerwill is an internationally recognized expert in the field of breast pathology. She is well known for her excellence in teaching, particularly in the post-graduate setting, and has been invited to present at numerous national and international meetings, post-graduate courses, and online courses. She has contributed to multiple pathology textbooks, including Rosen’s Breast Pathology, Sternberg’s Diagnostic Surgical Pathology, Blaustein’s Pathology of the Female Genital Tract, Practical Surgical Pathology of the Breast, Atlas of Breast Pathology, and Difficult Diagnoses in Breast Pathology, as well as the WHO Classification of Breast Tumours. She is a co-author of Survival Guide to Breast Pathology (in press), and she has authored educational material for online resources with wide outreach such as PathologyOutlines.com. She has served on the Education Committee of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology. Dr. Lerwill is co-director of the longstanding annual Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital continuing medical education course Current Concepts in Surgical Pathology. Her research publications span both breast and gynecologic pathology, with a particular focus on clinicopathologic aspects of metastatic lesions to the female genital tract. Dr. Lerwill has also authored multiple comprehensive review articles with an emphasis on histopathologic and immunohistochemical aspects that can aid pathologists in their everyday practice. Her goal is to provide conceptual frameworks and knowledge that enable pathologists to independently approach and solve challenging diagnostic problems in breast pathology.
