A/Prof Ilias Goranitis
Professional Bio
Ilias Goranitis is an Associate Professor of Health Economics, the inaugural Head of the Economics of Genomics and Precision Medicine Unit, and the Deputy Head of the Melbourne Health Economics within the Centre for Health Policy at the University of Melbourne. He is the Health Economics Lead of Australian Genomics.
His main applied and methodological work focuses on exploring the value and cost-effectiveness of genomic technologies using health economic and discrete choice modelling.
A/Prof Goranitis has been a successful co-applicant in research grants nationally (MRFF, NHMRC and the Department of Health) and internationally (UK NIHR, the UK Department of Health, and the Gates Foundation) worth over $80 million. His work has informed national health policy and international guidelines, and has been published in in top-tier clinical and health economics journals. A/Prof Goranitis was awarded the 2024 Deeble-Scotton Prize for Policy Impact from the Australian Health Economics Society.
Ilias and his team led the health economics evidence review to inform Cancer Australia’s National Framework for Genomics in Cancer Control and WHO’s investment case in human genomics. Ilias was invited to present his work at the World Health Organization Expert Meeting on ‘Accelerating access to human genomics for public health’ (2024), the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health National Initiatives Forum (2024), the European Society of Human Genetics conference (2023), the Human Genetics Society of Australasia meeting (2023), and the World Economic Forum Expert Meeting on ‘The economics of global data access for solving rare diseases’ (2020).

Ilias has led guest editorials on topics related to health economics and genomics for the Applied Health Economics and Health Policy journal and the Journal of Community Genetics.
A/Prof Goranitis has significant experience in teaching and leading the delivery of health economics related subjects to undergraduate economics and postgraduate health economics and public health students. He holds honorary appointments with the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, and he is an alumnus of the London School of Economics and University of Athens.
